Diagnosis

Costly facility related infections and staff absenteeism can be directly related to inadequate hand hygiene practices. In fact, an estimated 1.5 million facility related infections occur in LTC facilities every year, or approximately one infection per resident per year.³

There are several key factors attributed to this costly hand hygiene problem, including:

• Insufficient time and lack of information regarding proper hand hygiene procedures.
• Limited access to hand hygiene stations.
• Repeated exposures to soaps and detergents, which can cause skin irritations.

Treatment

The 2002 CDC Guideline for Hand Hygiene in the Health Care Setting recommends the use of alcohol-based instant hand sanitizers when hands are not visibly soiled.

In addition, the CDC recommends handwashing when hands are soiled, providing staff with preferred products and reliable dispensing and educational and training programs. Finally, the CDC also recommends placing alcohol-based hand sanitizers at the following locations:

• Near entrances to residents' rooms.
• In pocket-sized containers carried by caregivers.
• In other convenient locations.
