Diagnosis

Hand antisepsis reduces the incidence of healthcare-associated infections. However, frequent and repeated use of hand hygiene products - particularly soaps and detergents - is the primary cause of irritant contact dermatitis among HCWs. With HCWs washing their hands as many as 30 times per shift, the need for gentle, effective skin care regimens has never been more important. Unfortunately, only 50% of acute care hospitals maintain effective hand hygiene programs. As a result, many HCWs are not receiving the necessary products, information or support to abide by the CDC's recommended hand hygiene practices.

Treatment

As part of a complete hand hygiene program, the CDC recommends using multiple infection control agents and moisturizers. By doing so, infection rates and skin irritation caused by repeated exposure to traditional handwashing methods are significantly reduced.
