Increase Compliance
Delivering the right products, wherever they're needed in
the healthcare setting
Diagnosis
In today's acute care facilities, compliance with recommended hand hygiene
practices has been universally low. Demanding workloads and the intensity
of patient care have stretched HCWs' abilities so thin, they often fall
short of meeting recommended hand hygiene practices. A recent comparison
of 34 studies of handwashing compliance in an acute care setting discovered
that HCWs washed their hands only 40% of the time. The time required
for nurses to leave a patient's bedside, go to a sink, and wash their
hands before attending the next patient requires 62 seconds and has been
identified as a deterrent to frequent handwashing.8
Treatment
Providing easy access to hand hygiene materials is essential for promoting
appropriate hand hygiene behavior. Studies have shown that HCWs' accessibility
to hand hygiene stations has directly impacted their compliance with
proper hand hygiene practices. Additionally, it has been proven that
increased hand hygiene compliance resulted in a decrease in hospital-related
infection rates.
As part of a multi-disciplinary program to improve hand hygiene compliance,
the CDC recommends that HCWs are provided with readily accessible, alcohol-based
hand sanitizers in the following locations:
- At the entrance to patients' rooms
- At the patient's bedside
- In pocket-sized containers to be carried by HCWs
- In other convenient locations
